Come and witness this stunning competition by the best Chingay masters. It is a competition of balancing giant flags with outstanding acrobatic stunts.
 

Today, Penang is proud and grateful to have an act as unique and skillful as Chingay which has now become the ultimate signature act of Penang and also a main tourist attraction. Chingay, which is also known as a “Giant Flag Procession”, first originated from Penang in the early 19th century. Towering between 32ft to 35ft, the beauty of this act lies in its triangular flags which measures 25ft by 18ft with its flag pole made up of bamboo, making this giant flag the trademark of Penang's Chingay.

Chingay here in Penang is carried out by flag bearers who demonstrate their capabilities of balancing the giant flags. These giant flags are effortlessly thrown up into mid-air and balanced by the flag bearers creating suspense and awe for the audience who watches on in amazement and drawn breaths as the balancing of the gigantic and colourful triangular flags defy the motions of the wind while remaining upright either on one's forehead, teeth or a finger for mere seconds – causing plenty of anticipation. Chingay is not only an act but also an art taken on by people of our different Malaysian races and of all ages. This act delights the hearts of many – young and old. The act usually ends with a thunderous amount of applause and much praise for the flag bearer's victory. Though, it is a difficult task, a performance of great feat, only made fruitful with a lot of hard work and long hours of practices.

吃湯圓象徵團圓添歲


根據資料顯示，冬至吃湯圓的傳統習俗，在江南尤為盛行。湯圓是冬至必備食品，是一種用糯米粉製成的圓形甜品，“圓”意味著“團圓”、“圓滿”，冬至吃湯圓，象徵家庭和諧、吉祥，因此冬至吃湯圓又叫“冬至團”。

冬至團可用來祭祖，也可用於互贈親朋。舊時上海人最講究吃湯糰。古人有詩雲：“家家搗米做湯圓，知是明朝冬至天。”

在冬至前夜，主婦都會先把糯米浸水，用石磨磨成米漿，壓榨水分，成為“圓仔棲”，然後動員全家大小把它搓成小湯圓，分為紅、白兩種，紅的是用“紅花膏”染成。

冬至的清早，主婦用糖水把湯圓煮得浮起，然後拿去祭拜神明、祖先，過後再享用“冬至圓”，吃了冬至圓，帶有象徵團圓及添歲之意，因此也有“吃了湯圓大一歲”之說。

The Mid Autumn Festival commonly known in Malaysia as the Lantern and Moon Cake Festival is celebrated widely by everyone in our multi racial society. Everyone gets to enjoy moon cakes, some made from lard and the halal moon cakes made from vegetable oil.

Dating back 3,000 years to China's Zhou Dynasty, this moon gazing and lantern parading are celebrated in honour of Chang Er, the beautiful wife of tyrannical ruler and archer Hou Yi. Her boldness in saving the villagers by drinking the elixir of life has made her a legend to be remembered through all generation.

It is a time for the family members and friends to gather around to glaze and admire the full moon and at the same time savouring moon cakes, mini yams, water caltrops, cracking ground nuts, peeling pomeloes fruit and sipping Chinese tea.

There will be a state level Lantern Festival celebration in Bukit Mertajam on 18th Sept 2010. The highlight of the event is the parade which will start at 6pm from Jit Sin Independent School and ends at Pusat Perniagaan Maju Utara, Kampung Baru.

Follow up Astro superstars' performance at the main stage at from 8pm onwards.

This two-day long Carnival is set to bring excitement with interesting activities on stage and in booths including fun games and quizzes, performances, competitions, health checks, meet and greet session with local and international celebrities, food, and much more.

Visitors to ntv7’s Yuan Carnival on the first day will be entertained by the talented cast from ntv7’s latest Chinese local drama – Injustice – Tiffany Leong, William San, Chris Tong, Emily Lim, Wee Kheng Ming, Wincci Soo, and Alan Yun.

More activities awaits on Day-2 of ntv7’s Yuan Carnival as visitors will be entertained by Taiwan’s very own actress cum host, Chen Mei Feng.

Other personalities on Day-2 include ntv7’s latest gameshow “Feel Good Feel Cook” hosts, Alvin Wong and Roby Chan as well as ntv7’s Mandarin current affairs community-based programme, “Finding Angels” and “Project Sunshine” hosts – Chan Wei Wei and Tiang Kah Chee respectively.

Obon (お盆?) or just Bon (盆?) is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the departed (deceased) spirits of one's ancestors. This Buddhist custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral family places and visit and clean their ancestors' graves, and when the spirits of ancestors are supposed to revisit the household altars. Wesak is the most important of the Buddhist festivals and is celebrated on the full moon in May. It celebrates the Buddha's birthday, and, for some Buddhists, also marks his birth, enlightenment, and death.

In Penang during the festival, Buddhists will visit our local temples for services and teaching, and will give offerings to the monks of vegatarian food, candles and flowers.

More than 10,000 pilgrims from 35 Buddhist associations are expected to throng Burma Road to take part in this Wesak Day procession.

The float and candle light procession normally will cover 7km distance. It will start from the Malaysia Buddhist Association in Burma Road and proceed to Jalan Pangkor, Jalan Kelawei, Lorong Burmah, Jalan Burmah, Peel Avenue, Jalan Macalister, Jalan Anson, Lorong Madras before returning to Burma Road.

An event not to-be-missed ie. Komtar Tower Run is organized specially for sports enthusiasts and anybody willing to take on the physical and mental challenge to run up the entire 65-storey KOMTAR Tower, Penang’s tallest building and an icon of Penang in its heydays.

KOMTAR Tower is a 12-sided geometric block, 760ft (232m) tall, sitting atop a 4-storey podium and comprising of offices, retail commercial space as well as public and recreational facilities.

OBJECTIVES

It is our aim to achieve the following objectives :-

To encourage people from all walks of life to take a break from the daily challenges and to take on the physical/mental challenge of completing the race
To provide a different sports avenue – adding a variety to the usual running routes
