The Logos Hope Community

With around 45 different nationalities represented on board, the Logos Hope community is regarded as a genuine expression of international goodwill and understanding. The crew and staff are all non-salaried volunteers—including many serving in their professional capacity, such as seafarers, engineers, electricians, nurses, teachers and cooks. Sponsorship from friends, family members and civic organisations enables crewmembers to serve on board.

The age of volunteers ranges from retirees to children of families serving on board. Most of the crewmembers are in their 20s or 30s. From the captain to the newest staff member, each person has a job that is essential to keeping the ship running. Most people serve for two years.

Although the main aim of the ship is to serve people in the port communities, those on board also benefit personally during their term of service. A structured training programme, combined with work experience and cross-cultural encounters, provides crewmembers with valuable opportunities to learn new skills and develop character.

Date: 16-July-2011

Time: 6.00pm - 11.00pm

Venue: The Esplanade

Organizer:

The Consulate of Japan, Penang State Tourism Development & Culture and Bon Odori Committee

The Bon Odori Festival has become one of Penang's signature cultural event. In Japan, Bon Odori is celebrated to honour the departed spirits of ones ancestors. This festival is similar to the Hungry Ghost Festival. At the Penang Bon Odori Festival, one will have the opportunity to witness the showcase of Japanese culture, try out delicious Japanese food and not to mention, mingle around with the Japanese community in Penang.

This year the Bon Odori Festival will be held on 16 July 2011, from 6pm – 11pm at the Esplanade. There will be an exciting line up of performances, specially imported from Japan. The first one is the Samurai Maeda Toshiie Onda Mai, a Yosakoi dance group from Nagoya. The Yosakoi dance is a unique and traditional dance with a modern twist. Interestingly, the group's name originates from the famous Japanese Samurai warior, Maeda Toshiie. Ms Ranko Kurano,a famous Japanese opera singer will be singing a few Japanese songs. Ms Kurano used to teach at the Universiti Sains Malaysia and have been performing in Penang for the past year.

Then there's the Sasayama Dekansho Dance Wakamono Ren performance. “Dekansho” is a folk song originated from a Bon Odori song in Sasayama, Hyogo in the 17 th century. This group of youth is part of the Dekansyo Preservation Society and are supported by JENESYS (Japanese- East Asia Network of Exhange Students and Youth) , a programme by the Japanese government. The Penang Japanese School, Sakura-kai, Pink Hibiscus and Malaysian Students will also be performing for the night.

Bring your friends and family, and come dressed in traditional Japanese costumes, if you have one. And don't forget, at 10.00pm sharp there will be an extravagant display of fireworks!

Penang Starwalk 2011

Date: Sept 18, 2011

Time: 6:30AM

Venue: Penang Times Square

AN exciting new route is in store for Penang Starwalk 2011 participants in conjunction with The Star’s 40th anniversary this year.

This year’s walk incorporates a heritage route that will pass heritage sites such as Fort Cornwallis, City Hall, St George’s Church, Goddess of Mercy Temple, Kapitan Keling Mosque and Sri Mariamman Temple.

The event, to be held on Sept 18, aims to bring an awareness to the rich historical and cultural aspects of George Town.

The starting point will be at Penang Times Square on Jalan Datuk Keramat. The route for non-competition walkers is 6km long while it is 10km for competition walkers.

Competition walkers will be flagged off at 6.30am while non-competition walkers will start at 7.15am.

The Star regional operations manager (north) Chung Chok Yin said the walk would introduce elements of old Penang while helping to promote George Town’s listing as a Unesco World Heritage site.

“With the new route, we also hope to share with The Star’s readers the new look of the newspaper’s town office on Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling which is currently under restoration,” he said du-ring the official launching of Penang Starwalk 2011 yesterday at the Star Northern Hub in Bayan Lepas.

Chung said participants would receive a ‘Penang Starwalk 2011 Passport’ that they could present at six de-signated stops to be stamped.

“Those who collect all six stamps will be eligible for a lucky dip. Participants who complete the walk within two hours will be eligible for a lucky draw that offers RM100,000 worth of attractive prizes,” he said, adding that 20,000 participants were expected to take part in the walk.

Chung said the event was endorsed by the Penang Education Department, and school participants, aged 12 and above, would be issued with a certificate each which would carry co-curriculum points.

The event is also endorsed by Penang Global Tourism, Penang Sports Council, the Penang Municipal Council and the Malaysian Association of Hotels Penang Chapter.

Registration fee is RM10 for non-competition walkers and RM15 for competition walkers.

Registration is open from tomorrow. The public can sign up from 9.15am to 5pm on weekdays at the Star Northern Hub in Bayan Lepas or the newspaper’s George Town office at 15, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, or at the Penang Times Square’s information counter at its ground floor from 10am to 10pm daily.

Online registration is also available from tomorrow at http://sites.thestar.com.my/starwalk/.

A Facebook page has also been created for the event at http://www.facebook.com/StarWalk.my. There will also be roadshows at selected venues during weekends for registration.

The closing date for registration is Aug 15 for the competition category and Sept 1 for the non-competition category or when the 20,000 mark is reached, whichever is sooner.
